NEWARK - Federal immigration officials have announced the arrests of more than 100 illegal immigrants in New Jersey, including many people who have been convicted of serious crimes.
Officials say 107 of the 123 people arrested last week had criminal convictions. Of those, 82 were for felonies and 14 for sex crimes. By county, the most arrests were in Essex County with 21, followed by Hudson County with 16 and Middlesex County with 13.
The sweep conducted last week is part of an initiative by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with state and local law enforcement authorities. Nationwide, more than 2,800 illegal immigrants with prior criminal convictions were arrested.
