EDISON - The shooting of a Bayonne man who was alone in his home in 2012 by police has been deemed justified.

Mariano Vargas was shot dead by police after Vargas' family said they could not reach him by phone.

Officers say they found him in the living room, waving a large kitchen knife and threatening to kill them.  Police then opened fire and shot him once in the chest and arm.

According to reports, Vargas had a history of mental illness and was accused of attacking police officers in 2003.
