PATERSON - The family of a man killed in a hit-and-run says they are disappointed that the Paterson police officer accused of leaving the scene won’t face harsher charges.

Police say Jose Urena, an off-duty Paterson officer, struck and killed 23-year-old Jaquill Fields on Temple Street in Paterson nearly one year ago.

The family of Fields says they are disappointed Urena was indicted on charges of knowingly leaving the scene of a fatal accident and endangering an injured victim, and won’t face charges of vehicular homicide.

Urena is currently free on bond. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
