NEWARK - For the loved ones of Alan Best, this Christmas will be anything but happy as they prepare to bury the 16-year-old shooting victim.

Best was killed Thursday night on Avon Avenue in Newark, along with Jarid Smith, also 16 years old. Three others were wounded in the shooting.

Keisha Best, Alan's mother, was beside herself with the news that her son had been killed, saying, "I have to bury my child - my child should bury me."

Police say December is traditionally a high-crime month.

"It's not safe," Best's mother says. "You can't even walk to corner store without someone getting shot."

Investigators say so far, no arrests have been made in the shootings.
