Family, friends mark 5 years since murder of Jennea Workman, hope for new leads in case

Police say Jennea Workman was beaten and stabbed inside her downtown apartment. (5/8/14)

RAHWAY - A Union County family and friends came together Thursday night to remember the life of a 24-year-old woman murdered in Rahway.

Police say Jennea Workman was beaten and stabbed inside her downtown apartment. Five years later, close family and friends remember a young woman full of life. The family believes that by showing her face and talking about her life, maybe someone will finally talk to police.

"She was just a good person," says Workman's uncle, Kevin Brister. "I enjoyed her company. She was alive."

Workman was described as loving, fun, and energetic. Her family and friends have gathered outside her old apartment every year since her death in 2009. Each year they say they hope for an answer.

"It gets harder because it's a cold case, so the longer it takes the more we think it might not be resolved," says Workman's cousin, Trisca Johnson. "But we are hoping and we are praying"

Workman's family says her then-boyfriend called 911 when he didn't hear from her. Her body was found inside her apartment.

Union County Prosecutors say they continue to investigate her death, but there have been no arrests. "It was not forced entry," says Brister. "I believe it was someone that knew her. It could be someone coming out here today."

Her family says without answers, it's hard to get closure.

The Union County Prosecutor's Office says a $5,000 reward is available for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.
