NEWARK - The family of Steven McRae is demanding answers after he was killed in a shooting by an off-duty corrections officer last night.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor, an off-duty Essex County corrections officer was the victim of an attempted carjacking by two men on the 300 block of 7th Avenue.

The officer and the two suspects exchanged gunfire. The officer was injured and one of the suspects, identified as McRea, 20, was killed, according to officials.

The family says that police are blocking them from the site of McRae?s death and aren?t providing any answers as to what happened.

"If he did wrong. If he did right, I just want to see him," McRae's mother said. "I just want to bury my son."

Prosecutors say a 16-year-old has also been arrested in connection with the attempted carjacking. He's charged with carjacking and weapons offenses.
