JERSEY CITY - Fallen Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago has been posthumously promoted to the rank of detective and has received the department's Medal of Honor. Both ceremonies happened today at the officer's wake.
Police officers from all over New Jersey and the tri-state area as well as ordinary citizens who didn't even know the Santiago family came to McLaughlin Funeral home to pay their respects.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop read a letter from President Obama at the services before he promoted Santiago to detective.
A funeral service is scheduled for Friday morning at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church.
The 23-year-old was killed while responding to reports of an armed robbery early Sunday at a 24-hour pharmacy. Authorities say the suspect had grabbed a security guard's gun and waited for police to arrive before opening fire. He also was killed.
