FAIRFIELD - Officials have set up checkpoints to ensure only residents are being allowed back into Fairfield after Hurricane Irene left much of the town flooded.

According to the town's Office of Emergency Management, the only way in or out of town is Sand Road to Route 80. All other roads are impassable.

The town says floodwaters are expected to reach record flood levels. The Passaic River is likely to remain at a major flood stage through the rest of the week.
