Fair Lawn police reward kids using helmets with ice cream
FAIR LAWN - Officers in North Jersey hope a special treat will remind kids to be safe while riding their bikes.
Police in Fair Lawn are giving out certificates for free ice cream to kids who wear helmets.
Officers will be looking for kids wearing helmets while riding their bikes, scooters and skateboards. The certificates can be used at any of five ice cream parlors in the area.

Police want to emphasize the importance of wearing helmets at any age. "I've seen so many people that have simple accidents on a bike -- they just fall off and hit their head," says Sgt. Brian Metzler. "If they had a helmet on, it wouldn't have been anything."
It is the law in New Jersey for anyone under 17 to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. The child or their parent could receive a ticket if they are not wearing one.
