NEWARK - The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a report that a United Airlines plane was hit by a laser Tuesday night.

According to the FAA, the crew of United Airlines Flight 1550 reported that a laser illuminated the plane when it was flying 14 miles southwest of Newark Liberty International Airport. The incident happened just before 7:30 p.m.

The plane was able to safely land. No one was hurt.

Pointing a laser at a plane is a federal crime. Lasers can distract or temporarily blind pilots.

The FAA and local law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident.
