EDISON - As people across New Jersey deal with a second day of hot and humid conditions, experts warn that such weather can be dangerous.

News 12 New Jersey Meteorologist Dave Curren says temperatures in the state reached well over 90 degrees, and the humidity made it feel as if temperatures were over 100.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, extreme heat has caused nearly 7,500 deaths in the United States from 1999 to 2010. The CDC says heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable if people take the proper precautions.

People are urged to avoid strenuous activity, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. CDC experts say staying hydrated is very important. People should drink plenty of water and should not wait until they feel thirsty before doing so.

Experts also say that people over the age of 65 are at a higher risk for heat-related illnesses and should be checked on by friends and family. Others at risk include those with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women and small children.
