Experts urge pool and spa safety

EDISON - With summer in full swing, officials are asking New Jersey residents to practice pool and spa safety.

Nearly 400 kids drown every year in a pool or hot tub, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The commission says alarms should be placed on any door that accesses a pool area, as well as on the side of the pool. Residents are also urged to install a backyard gate that will close and latch by itself.

Each municipality across the state has its own safety requirements for residential pools.
