Ex-Middlesex sheriff denies guilt in bribery plot

FREEHOLD - (AP) - Former Middlesex County Sheriff JosephSpicuzzo and two men who worked for him say they're innocent ofbribery and other charges stemming from an alleged jobs-sellingplot in his office.

Spicuzzo, former investigator Darrin DiBiasi of MonmouthJunction and former sheriff's officer Paul Lucarelli of South Riverall entered not guilty pleas Monday in Superior Court in Freehold. The case was transferred to Monmouth County to avoid any potentialconflicts that might arise by having the case heard in the samecounty where Spicuzzo served as sheriff.

Prosecutors say Spicuzzo collected $112,000 in bribes frompeople seeking jobs or promotions with his office.

Judge Anthony Mellaci says the case will either be resolved withguilty pleas by January, or go to trial at that time.
