Ex-lawmaker Neil Cohen sentenced to 5 years for child porn

EDISON - A judge sentenced a former New Jersey lawmaker this morning to five years in prison for viewing nude images of underage girls.

Neil Cohen will serve the term either in prison or a mental hospital. He must also register as a sex offender under Megan's Law. Cohen pleaded guilty in April to a second-degree charge of child endangerment.

The 59-year-old could become eligible for release and be placed under intense supervision in several months.

Cohen, who now lives in Paramus, served 17 years in the state Legislature as a Democrat representing Union County. During his time in office, Cohen championed legislation fighting child pornography. He resigned following his arrest in July 2008.

AP wire services contributed to this report.
