HILLSIDE - A Union County man fought for his life Friday morning after waking up to find a man in his bedroom standing over him with a knife.

Evandro Rodrigues says the man snuck in through an unlocked door in the home in the 1200 block of Salem Avenue at around 2 a.m. "He took the knife and he put it on me," he says. "He said get down off the bed and lay down on the floor over here."

When the suspect put down the knife for a moment, Rodrigues says he was able to get away and run into a bathroom. There, the suspect grabbed the back lid of a toilet. He swung three times, finally striking Rodrigues in his nose.

The suspect, Charles Brooks, attempted to flee, but slipped and was tackled by Rodrigues who held him until police arrived.

Brooks, 21, was charged with burglary, robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon. Police say he had recently been released from prison after serving two years for a string of home burglaries.

Rodrigues shares a house with a mother and daughter. No one else was injured in the attack.

Brooks is back in custody at the Union County Jail.
