NEWARK - More than a 1,000 Essex County residents seeking food assistance lined up at Riverfront Stadium in Newark yesterday.

About 1,200 residents were processed at the makeshift center, but hundreds were turned away. They say they were told to return today to apply for assistance.

The county will continue to record statements of loss from residents who already receive food stamps from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at its makeshift processing center at the stadium until Friday.
