VERONA - As snow begins to fall in the early morning hours of Thursday, salt truck operators across Essex County will be loading their trucks with rock salt and sand to make sure the roads are safe for travelers.
However Thursday will be the 20th snow event the county has seen, and there is concern that the road salt supply will run out.
Bill Clark orders all of the road salt for Essex County, and he says some municipalities are borrowing salt from the county just to get through the overnight storm.
"Lots of towns have zero or minimal amounts [of salt]” he says. “They've been coming to the county and we've been giving what we can to them to keep them afloat until they do get deliveries."
According to Clark, there is enough salt left for two more snow events.
Essex County is still within the $5.5 million snow removal budget.
