Essex Co. residents on alert following rise in carjackings

NEWARK - Essex County residents are on alert after police say there have been more than a dozen carjackings in the area since last Friday.

According to authorities, the spike in carjackings include one incident that left a pedestrian dead in East Orange. Officials say they have been taking steps to put an end to the crimes and protect residents.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker says a task force has been introduced in Newark, where a lot of the incidents have occurred. Booker also took to his Twitter account to warn offenders.

Among the mayor's posts was one that read, "Anyone caught trying to carjack in our city will be tried in federal court."
