Emergency response compromised by construction gridlock in Marlboro

MARLBORO - Residents and firefighters are worried that emergency vehicles won't be able to respond quickly enough to calls because of construction in Marlboro.

The township is installing new curbs and storm drains on Union Hill Road, which will close the road off between Route 9 and Tennent Road for about three months.

Rush hour on Route 520 is bumper to bumper and fire commissioner James Mione says a fast response time from volunteers at Robertsville fire station is just not possible.

One suggestion has been to do the construction at night, but Marlboro has an ordinance that does not allow for that. Meanwhile, other fire departments in the area are prepared to help in the event of a fire.

The fire chief and police chief are expected to meet with township officials and a representative with the Department of Transportation later this week to come up with a possible solution.
