LEONIA - An elderly couple fell victim to a diversion burglary on Irving Street in Leonia.

Police say a man posed as a PSE&G contractor and distracted the 80-year-old resident into his backyard on Friday, while another person stole several thousand dollars from his home.

Officials are urging residents to be vigilant as the warmer months draw more workers to the area.

"All the utility companies, the major utility companies, are all required to wear proper ID," says Detective Sgt. Chris Garris. "But if you are afraid they are not from the utility company, tell them to wait at the front door and call the local police department."

Police are asking Irving Street residents to review any home surveillance systems that may have spotted the thieves.

The first suspect is described as a 5-foot 9-inch male weighing approximately 200 pounds. He was wearing a white polo shirt and a hat. The second burglary suspect was not seen.
