East Orange police search for carjacking suspect

EAST ORANGE - Investigators in East Orange are searching for a carjacking suspect who witnesses say fled into a building on South Maple Avenue.

Police say the suspect led police on a chase from Orange to East Orange at 3 p.m. after a carjacking attempt. Authorities say the suspect escaped on foot after crashing his car while making a sharp turn on to South Maple Avenue.

Police are investigating if the suspect fired shots at responding officers.

Despite police efforts to seal off the streets in the area, the suspect ultimately was able to elude authorities and eyewitnesses.

Police are asking anyone with information about the would-be carjacker to call East Orange police or the Essex County Violent Crimes Taskforce.
