ASBURY PARK - An Asbury Park home was destroyed in a fire early this morning, displacing a family of four.

The fire chief says that the fire may have been started by squatters living in a vacant house behind the home at 923 Cookman Ave.

A neighbor knocked on the door at around 5 a.m. to alert the Parker family that smoke was coming from behind their home. Shortly after the family vacated the house, it became engulfed in flames.

Thomas Parker lived on the first floor with his wife, nephew and niece. He returned for his motorcycle once his family was safe.

The Parker family will be staying with their adult daughter, Marie, and will receive aid from the Red Cross.

The fire chief says two firefighters suffered minor injuries while extinguishing the fire, but are expected to be OK.
