CLIFTON - A teenage girl who lost her battle with a rare type of bone cancer has sparked a fundraising effort for a boy battling leukemia.
Martin Minchev, 11, of Clifton will be attending Christopher Columbus Middle School in September. In January 2011, he was diagnosed with leukemia. His treatments took him to a hospital in New York City, where he met Maria Kutyla.
Maria suffered from Ewing's sarcoma, the rare bone cancer. A Miracle for Maria fundraiser was created, but she passed away shortly after it was started.
Before her death, she asked that those helping her turn their attention to helping Martin in his battle.
Martin has been through various blood transfusions, bone marrow transplants, chemo and radiation rounds. All are costly procedures.
Donations are helping his mother pay medical bills.
