WESTWOOD - Police say the driver of a sedan lost control and struck an employee leaving a Trader Joe's on Irvington Street Wednesday afternoon.

The female victim is said to have serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to Hackensack University Medical Center for emergency surgery.

Police say she had just completed her shift at the store and was getting a cart to do some personal shopping when she was struck just before 3:30 p.m. There was minor damage to the storefront.

The driver, described as elderly, was backing out of a handicapped space when she suddenly lurched forward and hit the employee, according to Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino.

Westwood police performed skid tests in front of Trader Joe's as part of the investigation.

There is no word on the condition of that driver or if any charges will be filed.

Police have not released the name of the victim or the driver.
