WALL TOWNSHIP - A young driver was killed in a crash at the Wall Stadium Speedway in Wall Township Saturday afternoon.
State police say the crash happened at 12:30 p.m. The female driver was in a three-quarter midget car when she crashed into a wall at the second turn.
The crash happened during a clinic race, which is a practice race, officials say.
The 21-year-old driver, who has not been identified, suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead.
All races scheduled for Saturday evening were canceled. Management with Wall Stadium has not confirmed if they will reopen as scheduled on Sunday.
Allyse Wolfinger, vice president of operations at New Egypt Speedway, says there are many safety precautions mandated by the state that need to be taken at every speedway. Those include wearing a helmet and a fire suit, using a neck restraint and equipping each car with the proper gear.
Detectives with the state police are expected to investigate whether all mandated safety rules were followed at the track at the time of the incident.
