HACKENSACK - Another Democrat has entered the race to be New Jersey’s next governor.

Dr. Robert Hoatson kicked off his campaign with a civil suit against the Bergen County Democratic Committee.

Hoatson, a former Catholic priest and whistleblower in the church's sex abuse scandal, says he wants to take on the dysfunction of state government.

The candidate says he is filing a civil suit against the committee for its choice of multimillionaire Phil Murphy as the party line candidate.

“I’m just looking for equity in this lawsuit,” Hoatson says. “I would like to be able to stand in front of a convention tell them what I believe. What I think the state needs in terms of leadership and then let the voters vote. But to be left out of the process is not the way the Democratic Party is formed.”

Hoatson says he hopes to see action before any ballots are printed with Murphy's name at the top.

There are currently nine Democrats in the gubernatorial race, including Hoatson. There are also four Republicans in the race, including Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.
