Dozens in East Orange say they didn't receive their food stamps

EAST ORANGE - Dozens of people from East Orange say they did not receive food stamps this month and now can't buy food to feed their families.

The situation erupted at the Citizens Services Building in East Orange this week, when county residents showed up to get answers. Many say Essex County officials told them they'd have to wait a month to get any assistance.

A county spokesperson said Essex has one of the highest caseloads of people receiving food stamps in the entire state of New Jersey and that is part of the problem.

Citizens Services Director Yvonne Davis says budget cuts have forced numerous changes to the system over the past few months, so some employees may not be up to speed. However, if a complaint is filed, the county must follow up within 24 hours.
