UNION CITY - Dozens of people have been displaced by a fire in several apartment buildings in Union City and seven firefighters have suffered dehydration and other injuries.

Officials say about 60 firefighters from Kearny, Jersey City, Hoboken and other departments helped fight the blaze late Sunday afternoon near intersection of 10th and Central avenues.

Five firefighters from North Hudson were treated for dehydration and two from Jersey City were injured when a banister collapsed. North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Chief Frank Montagne says one of those firefighters suffered a serious back injury. No residents were hurt.

The Red Cross says it has opened a shelter at a nearby school and is helping approximately 15 displaced families.
