DOVER - A police officer is in critical but stable condition after being hit by a car in Dover.

Authorities say the Dover officer was responding to an emergency call, but when he arrived, events took a strange and dangerous turn.

Police say the officer responded to a call at 32 E. Clinton St. on Saturday afternoon about two people possibly suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning inside a jeep. When he approached the vehicle, investigators say the driver ran over the officer and took off.

Another officer that was in the area pursued the jeep on foot. The officer ran down the vehicle, which had gotten stuck in traffic, and arrested the driver and his female passenger.

Officials say the 14-year veteran has a fractured femur, dislocated shoulder and a contusion to the left side of his head. He was reportedly taken to the hospital in an ambulance with a police escort.

Charges against the suspects are pending. Authorities are looking into whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
