NEWARK - After being separated for 24 years, a Newark resident reunited with his daughter at Newark International Airport Tuesday night.

Douglas Alfaro had left his daughter in Costa Rica 24 years ago to seek a better opportunity in the United States. He says that he had family in Newark and that the decision was difficult for him.

This past January, Alfaro’s friend in Costa Rica located his daughter.

Alfaro and his daughter spoke on the phone at first, then Skype and Facebook, before deciding to meet in person.

Prior to the Christmas Eve reunion, Alfaro said he was feeling nervous because he wasn’t sure how his daughter was going to react.

Karen Alfaro will spend the next four days with her dad before she returns to Costa Rica. She told her father she wants to go shopping in Manhattan.
