BLOOMFIELD - A 62-year-old man says that his T-shirt featuring Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump led to him getting into a confrontation and ultimately assaulted.

Peter Yankowski tells News 12 New Jersey that he was walking along West Passaic Avenue in Bloomfield on Aug. 3 wearing a T-shirt that depicts Trump with an American Flag background.

Yankowski says that an African-American man who appeared to be in his 20s drove by and yelled a rude comment about the shirt. The two men started to argue, according to Yankowski. He also admits to using some racial slurs toward the African-American driver.

The driver then left and Yankowski says that he went inside Friendly’s on Broad Street to get some ice cream. About 15 minutes later, according to Yankowski, the driver came back and was wielding a metal anti-car theft device similar to the Club.

Yankowski says that driver confronted him outside, they argued some more, and then the driver assaulted him with the metal device in front of witnesses.

“When they came outside, the kid was trying to hit him with the metal,” says Friendly’s employee Mimi Sonmez, who witnessed the attack.  “When I saw the metal going toward the white man’s head, I pushed the kid away.”

Bloomfield police say that since the driver came back to the store with the metal object, they are treating the incident as an assault. Police say that the driver’s car is an older model gray compact car with dents. They say that it may be from the late-1970s or early-1980s.

Anyone who may have any information about the incident is asked to call Bloomfield police at 973-680-4141.
