RAMSEY - The community at Don Bosco Preparatory School in Ramsey is mourning the loss of two former star student-athletes who were killed in a crash over the weekend.

Leonidas Vagias and Sam Cali, both 19, were killed after their car crashed along I-287 in Mahwah over the weekend.

According to reports Vagias was driving and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, but Cali was not.

Police have not yet determined how fast the car was traveling or if Vagias served to avoid a deer.

The flags were at half-staff at the school Tuesday as students and faculty remembered the two men.

“I’m just really shocked to hear what happened to them,” says Matt Perricone, who became friends with both Vagias and Cali through sports. “They were both amazing kids.”

Vagias was a kicker on the school football team and had just finished his freshman year at the University of Rhode Island.

Cali was a standout wrestler for Don Bosco. He just finished his freshman year at Rutgers University, where he also wrestled.

Don Bosco Athletic Director Brian McAleer remembers the boys as fierce competitors.

“We’ll be able to overcome this and be there for the family and rise above it,” he says.

More than 700 people attended a vigil held at the school Tuesday evening.
