HOLMDEL TOWNSHIP - A search is underway for the person who threw a dog out of a moving car on the Garden State Parkway.

Investigators say the incident occurred in the southbound express lanes near exit 116 in Holmdel Township between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.

Another car then struck the brown female terrier-mix.

The woman who hit the dog with her car stopped to call police and tried to help the dog. However, she drove off before police could question her, officials say.

A state trooper responded to the scene and took the dog to a veterinary hospital. It suffered lacerations to the face and internal injuries. The dog is now in stable condition.

The 24-pound terrier has been named Tara, after the officer who brought her to the animal hospital.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to an arrest in the case, but that number could climb: officials say they have been getting calls from people offering donations to add to the reward.
