Dog thrown down garbage chute recovering in Tinton Falls

TINTON FALLS - Patrick the dog's bones are still visible, but Dr. Tom Scavelli of Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls says that the pit bull mix is on the mend.

After three blood transfusions, antibiotics, and prescription dog food, Patrick is not only doing better, but he's miraculously walking.

The pooch is up about a pound and a half since being rescued from a dumpster in Newark nearly two weeks ago. The dog's spirit has touched tens of thousands of well wishers who've sent emails, letters and plenty of gifts. Veterinarians are now monitoring a foreign object detected by ultrasound in Patrick's stomach, which could be something he ate, but say he'll need to get stronger before surgery is even considered.

Doctors say his prognosis is good and that despite his awful experience, Patrick likes people and will one day make a great pet.
