NEWARK - Police officers shot and killed a dog during a drug raid in Newark on Wednesday.

The Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura says the incident happened as officers entered a known stash house on Weequahic Avenue. He says the officers came across of half-dozen pit bulls in the backyard, when one of them allegedly attacked.

The sheriff says officers were forced to fire upon the dog, killing him. The other dogs in the backyard were unharmed.

Sheriff Fontoura says four men, including 24-year-old Terrance Carter, were arrested following the raid. More than $7,000 worth of drugs was also seized.
