NEWARK - (AP) - Newark school officials are considering amassive reorganization of the city's schools that would make morespace for charter schools.

The Star-Ledger of Newark reports based on a document thenewspaper obtained that several schools could be consolidated orphased out.

State Deputy Education Commissioner Rochelle Hendricks says the39-page document is a planning document and wasn't meant for publicconsumption yet.

The plan calls for some long-struggling schools to be closed andtheir students sent elsewhere. Other schools with low enrollmentcould be consolidated.

The buildings freed up by the moves would be used to house newand existing charter schools. It's unclear whether they would payrent.

Newark's schools are getting an overhaul with the help of a $100million grant from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
