PERTH AMBOY - Those who knew the man fatally shot by police in a commercial area of Perth Amboy Wednesday are telling a much different story than officers investigating the shooting.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office was called in to investigate the shooting of Dixon Rodriguez, 32, in the area of the 100 block of Hall Avenue after 1 p.m.

Acting prosecutor Andrew Carey says officers were questioning Rodriguez and were forced to fatally shoot him when he tried to stab one of them with a knife. Police say they recovered a knife from the scene.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family has a different description of the shooting. They say Rodriguez had special needs and was waiting to go to a doctor's appointment. They confirm he did interact with the police. They say he was reaching for his ID but wasn't attacking them.

"All we're really asking is for justice to be made," says the victim's brother Juan Kelison Rodriguez. "He was a peaceful person."

Carey says video from a surveillance camera confirms that Dixon Rodriguez tried to stab an officer.
