TOMS RIVER - Toms River police say that a man suffering from emotional issues prompted a lockdown at the ShopRite along Route 37.
According to officials, Seaside Heights police put out an alert to look for an “emotionally disturbed” man, who may have been traveling through Toms River. A Toms River police officer tried to pull over the 39-year-old man around 8:30 p.m., but the man refused to pull over.
The man then pulled into the ShopRite parking lot and refused to exit his car. Police say that the man appeared to be in a “highly agitated” state. The ShopRite and other businesses in the area were told to keep everyone inside as a precaution.
Police officers spoke to the man for about an hour, and he was taken into custody just before 10 p.m. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
No one was injured. Officials have not said if the man faces any charges.
