NEWARK - A jewelry designer is taking a fashionable approach to cutting down the number of illegal guns in Newark.

Jessica Mindich is melting down weapons that have been used to commit crimes and fashioning them into bracelets. Mindich says she was inspired with the idea behind the 'Caliber Collection' during a roundtable discussion with Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

"He spoke so eloquently and passionately about the really insidious problem of gun violence," Mindich said, "and specifically, what was going on in Newark."

Pieces in the Caliber Collection sell from $150 to $275. Mindich is donating 20 percent of the proceeds to Newark police to pay for gun buybacks.

Just last week, she was able to present the department with a check for $20,000.
