DENVILLE - A new smoking ban goes into effect today in Denville.

The town council voted 7-0 in favor of adopting the new ordinance on July 13. The move prohibits smoking in all of the township?s public parks and recreational areas and adjacent parking lots and sidewalks.

First time offenders will face a fine of up to $100 or up to two days of community service. Second-time offenders will face up to a $250 fine or five days of community service.

A third offense could bring up to a $500 fine or community service of at least 10 days, "or any combination of fine, imprisonment and community service determined by the municipal court,'' according to the township?s ordinance.

The ordinance specifies cigars, cigarettes and pipes as prohibited items.
