PASSAIC - Two of three buildings destroyed in a massive fire on a Passaic street were torn down Thursday.

The 7-alarm fire on Broadway threatened an entire city block and firefighters are still trying to determine the cause of one of the worst fires in Passaic's recent history.

Demoliton crews arrived at around 7 p.m. and began peeling back just enough of two of the buildings so that investigators could get a better look at the damage and figure out what caused the fire.

The fire broke out around 9 p.m. Wednesday, spreading from a smaller two-story building to the two buildings next door, until the flames broke through the rooftops.

In the meantime, residents and owners are trying to figure out what to do next.

Abdana Balon and her husband immigrated from Peru to New Jersey 20 years ago. The couple poured their entire life savings into the apartment building on Broadway.

Dozens of people lived in the apartments and Abdana says the real pain is knowing so many people lost everything.
