SEASIDE PARK - Demolition has begun on the blocks of boardwalk in Seaside Heights and Seaside Park that were destroyed by a fire last month.

The borough administrator in Seaside Heights says local and state government officials worked quickly on getting the demolition started due to safety concerns and the need to reopen.

Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers says the project could be completed by as early as Christmas. Akers says the work can be done quickly because much of the planning was already done after Hurricane Sandy, including design plans.

The rebuilding process has also been sped up by the state, which immediately committed $15 million to kick-start demolition and construction.

However, Akers adds that working with multiple property owners will present a challenge.

Eagle Paving Company, run by the owner of the now-destroyed FunTown Amusement Pier, was picked to rebuild the boardwalk for $4.7 million. Work began on Sunday.
