JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP - The 11-year-old daughter of a Jersey City police officer killed in the line of duty say that she is demined to carry on her father’s legacy.

Gwen DiNardo was one of 75 young cadets who participated in the Jefferson Township Junior Police Academy this week.

The 11-year-old is the daughter of Jersey City Detective Marc DiNardo who was killed in 2009 while responding to a shootout.

"I'm so proud of each and every one of them.  It's a rigorous week and today wraps up this entire week and it just all brings us together as one,” says Jefferson Township Police Officer Joseph Hale.

Gwen DiNardo says that although the camp was hard, it brought her one step closer to her dad.

“I miss him a lot,” she says. “I miss him more than anybody.”

Gwen’s mother Mary DiNardo says that her daughter has shown a lot of interest in police work. In addition to the camp, Gwen has dressed as a police officer for Halloween and played one in a school skit.

"My dad did it and he was good at his job…it makes me feel more confident about myself,” Gwen says.

Gwen’s mother says that she will be supportive if Gwen choses to get into law enforcement, but it also makes her nervous.

"If this is the beginning of Gwen's career, if this is what she really wants to do, of course it's going to make me nervous,” Mary DiNardo says.

Gwen says that she will participate in the junior police academy again next year.
