TRENTON - A crossing guard was struck and killed Monday afternoon while working in Trenton.

Trenton police say that Antonio Wiley, 59, was helping people cross the intersection of Route 129 and Lalor Street around 3:15 p.m. when he was struck by a Chevy Avalanche pickup truck.

Witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that the driver was heading north on Route 129, ran through a red stop light, and clipped another car that was turning left before striking Wiley in the crosswalk.

Wiley was not a school crossing guard. He works for Tri-County Security, a company hired by the city of Trenton to provide crossing guards at busy intersections. The intersection of Route 129 and Lalor is right near the South Village senior citizen apartment complex.

Neighbors say the intersection is very dangerous and another fatal accident happened in the same spot last year.

Police have not released the name of the driver involved in the crash. He reportedly stopped immediately after the crash and stayed at the scene. Police did not say if any summonses or criminal charges will be issued.
