FORT LEE - Crews have repaired a large water main break in Fort Lee that closed several streets and caused a major headache for residents and businesses in the area yesterday.
The break, which was reported on 16th Street between Edsall Boulevard and Anderson Avenue, buckled the road in two places and flooded the Presidential Apartments.
United Water assessed the damage to an 8-inch pipe, and says residents were without water.
The building’s superintendent says he is used to taking care of the building, but didn't expect the amount of water he was faced with today. He says water flooded the building’s basement.
A community center and several businesses in the area were closed.
United Water Communications Director Steve Goudsmith says crews worked to correct the problem. The Fort Lee Fire Department kept a truck outside the Presidential Apartments overnight, since the sprinklers do not work without water.
Th utility says water service has been restored to all businesses and residents.
