LAKEWOOD - Search crews have been unable to find an unidentified swimmer who reportedly went missing Friday evening in Lake Shenandoah in Lakewood.

Rescue crews searched for the swimmer on Friday evening, and after an overnight hiatus, renewed their search on Saturday morning. The search appears to have been called off; crews left the park around noon Saturday and it was reopened to the public.

"Everybody was here," said Tom Varneke, owner of Lake Shenandoah Boating Bait & Tackle. "Dive teams, search and rescue. A helicopter was here to check it out."

State police and divers used also sonar equipment to aid in the search.

The unidentified swimmer reportedly went under the water and never surfaced.

Police say swimming is not permitted in the 48-acre lake, which is part of Lake Shenandoah County Park.
