Crews restoring a centuries-old burial ground in Westfield

WESTFIELD - Crews are busy at work restoring centuries-old burial ground in Westfield.

The Burial Grounds of the Presbyterian Church of the Westfields of Elizabeth is listed on the national historic registry, but time and weather have taken their toll on the historic grounds of the Presbyterian Church. Many of the headstones have been damaged or even destroyed.

The church has formed a preservation committee for the burial grounds. The committee has partnered with a restoration company and is working to repair and preserve the burial grounds plot-by-plot.

The restoration project is being funded through donations and grants.

The first known burial at the cemetery was of a 6-week-old baby named Noah Miller. His burial took place in the year 1730.
