BERNARDS TOWNSHIP - State police shut down I-287 in both directions in Bernards Township after a possible pursuit ended in a crash Monday afternoon.

The northbound side of the highway has since reopened.

Witnesses say the accident involved a Bernards Township police cruiser, an SUV, and a minivan at around 2 p.m.

"The suspect's car flew past me," says Bruce Kriegsies. "I assumed it was a speeder until I saw the state trooper in my rearview mirror going about 100 mph chasing him, and then I realized it was more serious than that."

A woman and at least one man inside the black SUV were handcuffed at the scene. The woman was then taken to a hospital via Medevac.

The officer in the cruiser and someone riding in a silver minivan were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Witnesses say the officer gave spectators on a nearby overpass a thumbs up to show them he would be OK.

Police have not released any information on the victims or any charges filed in the incident.
