NORTH BERGEN - Three people are dead in a single-vehicle crash in northern New Jersey that has snarled traffic leading to the Lincoln Tunnel.

The crash occurred around 6 a.m. Thursday where Route 3 eastbound in North Bergen merges with the Route 495 approach to the tunnel leading into New York City.

Video from Chopper 12 showed debris spread across a grassy area off the roadway. Police laid out tarps on top of parts of the vehicle.

Authorities say two men and a woman were in the vehicle, which has a Massachusetts license plate. Their names have not been released.

All three lanes of Route 3 were closed for several hours, causing traffic to back up for miles.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
