MIDDLESEX BOROUGH - An 11-year-old girl accused of defacing public property is due in court next week after her family refused to accept a deal with police. Officials say Kelly Ziert was among a group of middle-school students in October who admitted to carving their names, initials and other symbols into fresh concrete along a sidewalk next to Watchung Elementary School. Police say seven slabs of concrete were damaged.
The other kids and parents involved signed an agreement with police, promising to pay $250 each toward repairs, write an essay, and have a 5 p.m. curfew for three months. Ziert's family refused the same deal.
Police say their offer was a good one that was offered only to kids with no record.
